Rome City Schools' Director of Instructional Technology, Safety, and Operations, John Fricks, has been named to Kennesaw State University's inaugural class of 40 Owls Under 40. This program recognizes alumni from KSU and Southern Polytechnic State University (SPSU) who have made significant contributions in their fields and communities before reaching the age of 40.

KSU President Kathy S. Schwaig remarked on the significance of the award: “The true measure of value for any university lies in the impact of its alumni. This first class of 40 Owls Under 40 is filled with leaders, entrepreneurs, educators, civil servants, and innovators. We are proud to call them our own and know they will continue to have great impact through their work and service.”

Fricks completed his Master's Degree at Kennesaw State in 2018 and an Educational Specialist Degree in 2020. He began his career at Rome City Schools as a classroom teacher before advancing to Assistant and Associate Principal roles at Rome High School. His current position involves enhancing school safety measures and integrating technology such as Artificial Intelligence into the district's operations.

Rome City Schools Superintendent Dr. Eric L. Holland praised Fricks' dedication: “Mr. Fricks continues to do outstanding work at Rome City Schools for our students, faculty, and staff. He has a true heart for education and for students, and we get to see that in action each day,” he said. “We are extremely proud of his work and his efforts, and he truly deserves this recognition.”

In addition to this accolade, Fricks was also recognized last year as a semifinalist for the AI Educator Awards by MagicSchool. He was selected from a global pool of educators who utilize Artificial Intelligence to enhance educational outcomes.

With nearly half of KSU’s alumni under 40 years old—approximately 47,000 graduates—eligible for this honor, candidates were assessed based on professional achievements, community involvement, and commitment to the university through a rigorous nomination process that garnered over 400 submissions during Fall 2024.

The Class of 2025 honorees will be celebrated at an awards luncheon on March 21 at the Kennesaw Campus.
