Rome High School senior Karly Nguyen has been named the STAR Student for the Class of 2025. Nguyen, who is the daughter of Dung and Tein Ngyuen, emphasized that becoming a STAR student is about perseverance. "To be STAR student, honestly, it's not always about the test score. But it's always about the journey of getting there, meaning just hard work and persistence," she said.
Nguyen boasts a 4.518 GPA and has received numerous academic accolades including being an AP Scholar with Distinction, a National Merit Semifinalist, and earning The College Board’s National First Generation Recognition. Her high school career includes participation in 13 AP classes and achievements such as the Georgia Certificate of Merit and Young Georgia Writers winner.
In addition to her academic success, Nguyen is active in various school clubs including Rome High Chorale, BEAR Club, Interact Club, National Honor Society, Junior Civitan Club, Psychology Club, DECA member, and was part of the robotics team. She also volunteers at St. Mary’s Catholic Church and her parent's nail salon.
Nguyen selected Seth Winstead as her STAR Teacher citing his encouragement and motivation in teaching U.S. History as reasons for her choice. "He encourages his students and keeps them motivated...He's always there to answer any questions you need," she explained.
Looking ahead to college life at the University of Georgia where she has been accepted into the Double Dawgs Program, Nguyen plans to major in art while considering a second major related to technology's impact on creativity. “I want to dive into how AI impacts creative spaces,” she mentioned regarding her future studies.
