On Tuesday, Nov. 8, the Fulton County Board of Education announced Katherine "Katie" Gregory as the individual selected to fulfill the remainder of Gail Dean's unexpired District 3 term. She was named the seat's finalist after the board conducted an extensive process to solicit, vet and appoint a qualified candidate.
"This is a unique board district in that it is totally bisected by the City of Atlanta, and includes portions of College Park, East Point, Hapeville and Sandy Springs. The board looked for a candidate who can build consensus and has a desire to learn about the different aspects of our district. Katie was the right person," said board President Julia Bernath. "We spoke with many intelligent and passionate candidates, and we thank each of them for their dedication and willingness to serve."
Gregory currently is Chair of the School Governance Council at Hapeville Elementary School and has dedicated her time to supporting the school, its programs, and the Hapeville community. Seeing an opportunity for greater parent involvement, Gregory helped reinstate the school's PTA after it became inactive. She also served the community on Hapeville Main Street's Board of Directors and is a member of Tri-Cities Church in East Point.
"It is an honor to be selected for this role. I look forward to representing the schools and the strong diversity in District 3," said Gregory. "I am excited about bringing their voices to the board table."
Gregory comes to the school board with experience in public service and advocacy. A graduate of the University of Alabama with a chemical engineering degree, Gregory serves as Vice President of McGuireWoods Consulting in Atlanta. In this position she works in government affairs at the state and local levels and provides support on environmental policy and climate change issues. She also has worked at the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) as a manager in the Land Protection Branch, with a focus on air protection, earlier in her career.
The board expressed appreciation for Gregory's work at the state level and her knowledge of public policy.
"I am pleased to welcome Katie's policy expertise and experience working with Georgia legislators. She will add to the board's skill sets in support of all students," said board Vice President Kimberly Dove. "I look forward to working with her."
A swearing-in ceremony will be held in December, with Gregory's term officially beginning in January 2023 at the same time as newly elected board members Kristin McCabe, Michelle Morancie and Lillie Pozatek.
Gregory's term will expire in December 2024.
