What are the Georgia Milestones?
Georgia Milestones measures how well students have learned the knowledge and skills outlined in the state-adopted content standards in language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. The exam is designed to provide students with critical information about their own achievement and their readiness for their next level of learning. The state requires that all students in grades 3-12 take the test.
Who takes it?
- Grades 3, 4, 6, and 7 take End-of-Grade (EOG) assessments in the content areas of language arts and mathematics.
- Grade 5 takes End-of-Grade (EOG) assessments in the content areas of language arts, mathematics, and science.
- Grade 8 takes End-of-Grade (EOG) assessments in the content areas of language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies.
- High School students take an End-of-Course (EOC) assessment for each of the ten courses designated by the State Board of Education.
What exams are included in the Georgia Milestones?
Students in 3rd grade through 8th grade are required to take the appropriate Georgia Milestones End-of-Grade (EOG) assessments each spring. All students in these grades test in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics, while students in 5th grade and 8th grade are additionally assessed in Science and students in 8th grade are also assessed in Social Studies.
Students taking the following high school level courses (including middle schoolers) must take the coinciding Georgia Milestones End-of-Course (EOC) assessment to receive credit: American Literature and Composition, Algebra I, Biology, United States History.
Additionally, middle school students enrolled in high school level Physical Science are to take the corresponding EOC assessment. However, high school students no longer take the Physical Science EOC exam.
Are there study resources for my student’s test?
The GA Department of Education maintains study resources for many tests on its website (“Assessment Guides”). To see what online testing is like, you and your student may visit the Experience Online Testing Georgia website at http://gaexperienceonline.com. Additionally, students and parents can talk to their GCA teachers and/or counselors to learn how best to study for specific exams.
When are the Georgia Milestones exams?
- Elementary Schools - May 4th-12th
- Middle Schools - April 25th-May 6th
- High Schools (American Literature and Composition, Algebra I, Biology and U.S. History) - April 25th-29th
What should I do if my student misses testing?
Please remember that state-mandated tests are required. If your student does miss a test session, it is important to contact your teacher as soon as possible. If you know beforehand that your student will not be present at an assigned test session, let your teacher know. Your teacher will work to schedule your student for a make-up test session, if possible.
