Governor Brian Kemp of Georgia has appointed John Fervier as the new chair of the State Elections Board. Fervier, praised by Kemp for his significant management experience in both public and private sectors, will take over from William Duffey, Jr., who recently resigned.
In a press release issued by Kemp's office, the Governor expressed his gratitude towards Fervier: "I am grateful for John's willingness to serve our state in this role. His dedication to the well-being of Georgia and its people will be a great asset in this role in the days ahead. I am confident that under his leadership, Georgians will be able to trust in the integrity of one of our great responsibilities as citizens - the right to vote."
The same press release highlighted Fervier's professional background. Currently serving as Vice President of Risk Management and Security at Waffle House, Inc., Fervier brings over 35 years of experience in various management roles encompassing risk, workers’ compensation, safety, group health insurance, wellness, and security. Prior to his tenure at Waffle House, Fervier served in the U.S. Army. He is also involved in multiple roles at various boards and associations related to workers' compensation and charitable causes. A graduate from Berry College, he resides in Norcross with his wife Sarah.
According to AP News, changes were made to the law in 2021 which previously had the secretary of state chairing the board. Kemp's recent appointment of Fervier circumvented a potential scenario where the House could have nominated and the Senate confirmed a new chair if this issue had not been addressed before their Monday session.
AP News also reported that Fervier currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees at the Georgia Subsequent Injury Trust Fund. His initial appointment by former Gov. Nathan Deal in 2012 marked his first tenure on this board; he was subsequently reappointed in 2018.
