This past December, the Georgia Highlands College Foundation (GHC Foundation) raised more than $2,200 for scholarships during the annual Detavious “DJ” Milner Fundraiser.

The event, held at Centre Stage on the GHC Heritage Hall site, featured dinner, dancing and entertainment. All proceeds from the $35 ticket sales went to the Detavious “DJ” Milner Memorial Scholarship.

The event was attended by Milner’s family, friends and members of Brother 2 Brother (B2B), including several scholarship recipients.

Milner, a GHC student from Rome who attended the Marietta and Floyd sites, was killed in a shooting incident in Rome in 2015.

His parents, Pastor Petra and Tammy Greene, decided to honor his memory by creating a scholarship in his name through the GHC Foundation — the Detavious “DJ” Milner Memorial Scholarship. Because Milner was so proud of his involvement in the student organization Brother 2 Brother (B2B) while he was a student, Pastor and Mrs. Greene decided to have the memorial scholarship go to current B2B members annually.

“It’s important of course to help the family maintain the Milner Scholarship to honor DJ, but also important to fund the scholarship which helps current GHC students and B2B members to fund their education,” Project Director for Inclusion and Equity Jon Hershey said.

Some requirements for recipients of this scholarship include being an active member of GHAME/B2B and a returning student, having completed a minimum of one semester at GHC and maintaining a 2.0 GPA.

The scholarship application window for current students will open soon. Click here to learn more about the GHC Foundation and available scholarships.
