The Georgia Department of Education states that chronic absenteeism persists in Georgia schools following the pandemic, with 20.7% of students in 2024 missing at least 10% of school days. In response, GaDOE introduced a new statewide effort with resources such as a real-time attendance dashboard, a public outreach program, and targeted support for schools with the highest need to increase attendance rates.
Georgia lawmakers in 2025 approved changes to school attendance laws that prohibit expulsion solely due to absenteeism and introduce new reporting criteria. The bill also coordinates with diploma programs offering alternative paths for graduation. Full bill text at this link.
By 2026, Georgia reached an average student-to-teacher ratio of about 14:1, slightly better than the national average of 15:1.
