FOIA Request Sent to Floyd County Election Department Regarding Ballot Counting Methods on October 29, 2024

A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Floyd County Election Department on October 29, 2024. The request, issued by Rome Reporter, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, sought information regarding the methods being used to count votes in the upcoming election.

In particular, the request asked for details about whether the vote counting process is manual or automated. If manual counting is being employed, the department was also asked to provide an estimated number of personnel who will be working on election night.

As members of Rome Reporter, we believe that access to such public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. These include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. Given our role in disseminating information, we requested a fee waiver as media professionals.

The Floyd County Election Department has yet to respond to this FOIA request. We will continue our efforts in promoting transparency and accountability within local government operations and will update our readers as soon as more information becomes available.
