A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Chattooga County Election Department in Georgia on October 29, 2024. The request was made by us at Rome Reporter, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
In our quest for transparency and accountability, we requested records under the Georgia Open Records Act § 50.18.70 et seq., specifically asking for a list of methods being used to count votes in the upcoming election. If manual counting is being employed, we also asked for an estimated number of people who will be working on election night.
As journalists, we believe access to public records is essential in fulfilling our professional responsibilities which include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. We are committed to disseminating this information once received and have requested a fee waiver as a media professional.
We eagerly await the response from the Chattooga County Election Department and will continue to report on this matter as more information becomes available.
