USA South Athletes of the Week - Sept. 5, 2022

FOOTBALL

Football Offensive Player of the Week

David Loughry II, Greensboro - The senior quarterback from Indian Land, South Carolina totaled 476 yards passing with five touchdowns in a 48-37 loss to Guilford last week. Loughry II was 24-of-50 through the air while averaging 9.8 yards per attempt. On the ground, Loughry II carried the ball three times for a total of 12 yards. Also Nominated: Kobe Praylow, Methodist; Conner Bradford, Huntingdon; Kolbe Blunt, Belhaven; Sean Washington, N.C. Wesleyan.

Football Offensive Rookie of the Week

Bryson Rollins, Maryville - The freshman quarterback from Elizabethton, Tennessee accounted for three touchdowns and 266 yards of total offense as the Scots fell to Berry, 31-24. Rollins was 15-of-29 through the air for 228 yards and two touchdowns. On the ground, Rollins carried the ball 16 times for 38 yards and a score. Also Nominated: None.

Football Defensive Player of the Week

Phazion Locke, Belhaven - The Mobile, Alabama senior defensive back notched a co-game-high ten total tackles and intercepted a pass in a 49-21 victory over Millsaps last week. Locke totaled a game-high seven solo tackles with three assisted take downs. His interception came at the beginning of the second quarter and helped lead to a touchdown on the ensuing possession. Also Nominated: Alex Boyd, Methodist; Kymani VaiVai, Southern Virginia; Cameron Spivey, Maryville; Casey Peppers, Huntingdon; Jerome Bass, Brevard; Korey Hunter, N.C. Wesleyan.

Football Defensive Rookie of the Week

Maikeli Tuinakauvadra, Southern Virginia - The freshman defensive lineman from St. Petersburg, Florida totaled six tackles with one sack in a 52-27 loss to Wilmington. Tuinakauvadra accumulated two solo tackles and four assisted take downs while the sack resulted in a loss of five yards. Also Nominated: Eli Webb, Belhaven.

Football Special Teams Player of the Week

Stamati Damalos, Brevard - The senior place kicker from Tarpon Springs, Florida accounted for all of the Tornados points in a 45-6 loss to Shorter last week. Damalos was two-for-two on field goal attempted, including breaking his own school record with a 48-yard effort. Also Nominated: Trey Hampton, Maryville; Marano Collins, Greensboro.

Men's Soccer Player of the Week

Danny Alvarez, William Peace - The Cary, North Carolina senior midfielder scored the game-winning goal in the team's lone win of the week in a 1-1 effort to open the season. In a 1-0 victory over Randolph, Alvarez scored the contest's only goal in the 24th minute. In a 2-0 loss to Hampden-Sydney, Alvarez managed three shots. Also Nominated: Casey Atwell, Methodist; Reed Robertson, Southern Virginia; Sam Stewart, Pfeiffer.

Men's Soccer Defender of the Week

Cole Hupp, Methodist - The Virginia Beach, Virginia junior goalkeeper allowed one goal and stopped four shots in his only appearance last week for the Monarchs, a 2-1 victory over New England College. Also Nominated: Samuel Jaggi, Southern Virginia; Tripp Kidd, William Peace; Matheus Rossi, Brevard; Fred Rogers, N.C. Wesleyan.

Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week

Matheus Rossi, Brevard - The Victoria, E.S., Brazil freshman goalkeeper allowed three goals while stopping 83% of the shots he faced in an 0-2 week for the Tornados. In a 2-1 loss to Southern Wesleyan, Rossi played the second half and allowed one goal while making four saves. In a 2-0 loss to Carolina University, Rossi went the distance and stopped 11 shots. Also Nominated: Matthew Walker, Methodist; Samuel Jaggi, Southern Virginia; Ricky Sexton-Hernandez, Pfeiffer; Leho Louarn, N.C. Wesleyan.

 

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Women's Soccer Player of the Week

Claire Bailey, N.C. Wesleyan - The Montclair, Virginia graduate student midfielder scored four goals with one assist in a 1-1 week for the Battling Bishops. In a 9-0 win over Grace Christian, notched one first half score before tallying three goals and one assist in the second half. In a 5-2 loss to Bob Jones, Bailey managed two shots. Also Nominated: Ashley Linden, Salem; Rianna Orello, Methodist; Makinna Winterton, Southern Virginia; Raine Greene, William Peace; Morgan Thomas, Meredith; Emma White, Brevard.

Women's Soccer Defender of the Week

Makenzie Jones, William Peace - The Hope Mills, North Carolina senior goalkeeper posted one shutout as the Pacers went 2-0 last week. In 153 minutes played, Jones stopped all 11 shots faced. In a 2-0 win over Johnson & Wales, Jones played 63 minutes and made one save. In a 3-0 victory over Ferrum, Jones went the distance and stopped all ten shots faced. Also Nominated: Jordan Tomberlin, Salem; Kaylea Carter, Methodist; Hailey Gadd, Southern Virginia; Kaylee Ollis, Pfeiffer; Makaela Stokes, N.C. Wesleyan; Sofia Pagnamenta, Greensboro.

Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week

Darilyn Nieto, Salem - The Greensboro, North Carolina first year scored twice in the only contest last week for the Spirits, a 9-0 victory over Regent. Nieto scored the eventual game-winning goal of the match in the sixth minute and added another tally in the 47th minute. Also Nominated: Tori Renna, Pfeiffer; Camaryn Piper, Methodist; Lindsey Clausen, Southern Virginia; Nicole Arroyo, Brevard.

 

VOLLEYBALL

Volleyball Player of the Week

Hannah Collier, William Peace - The junior outside hitter from Creedmoor, North Carolina averaged 4.00 kills and 4.00 digs per set, to go along with a .413 hitting percentage, as the Pacers posted a 4-0 record last week with wins over Bob Jones, Roanoke, Piedmont, and Averett. Collier notched two double-doubles while her match-highs included 17 kills, 17 digs, three blocks, two service aces, and one assist (twice). Also Nominated: Madison Honeycutt, Pfeiffer; Geneva Barriger, Methodist; Jaylyn Templeton, Greensboro; Courtney Pinkston, Southern Virginia; Hailey Long, Meredith; Kaitlyn Pressley, Brevard; Sloan Martin, N.C. Wesleyan.

Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week

Georgia Grace Anderson, William Peace - The sophomore middle hitter from Rockingham, North Carolina averaged 1.42 blocks per set as the Pacers posted a 4-0 record last week with wins over Bob Jones, Roanoke, Piedmont, and Averett. Anderson's match-highs included seven blocks, eight kills, one assist, and one dig (twice). Also Nominated: Mattie Burris, Pfeiffer; Carrie Jordan, Methodist; Lauren Kunke, Greensboro; Emma Steiger, Southern Virginia; Bailey Lance, Brevard.

Volleyball Rookie of the Week

Lillie Davis, Meredith - The freshman setter from Roxboro, North Carolina averaged 8.00 assists and 2.07 digs per set as the Avenging Angels posted a 3-1 record last week gaining wins against Piedmont, Bob Jones, and Roanoke. Davis posted match-highs of 41 assists, nine digs, five kills, three service aces (twice), and two blocks (twice). Also Nominated: Madison Tate, Pfeiffer; Carrie Jordan, Methodist; Payton Shiflet, Greensboro; Ashley Torbeson, Southern Virginia; Blair Nance, Brevard; Ludmila Borges, N.C. Wesleyan.

 

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week

Drew Topoly, Methodist - The junior from Smithfield, North Carolina placed first out of 119 runners at the USC Upstate Eye Opener last week. Topoly completed the 8,000-meter course in a time of 24:56 which is the fourth-fasted mark in program history. Also Nominated: Trent Rivers, Pfeiffer; Dylan May, Southern Virginia; Devon Brodmyer, Brevard.

Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Week

Carter Johnson, Southern Virginia - The freshman from Winchester, Virginia placed 14th out of 45 runners at the Eastern Mennonite Heritage Invitational last week. Johnson completed the 5,000-meter course in a time of 17:39 good for first among all rookie runners in the race. Also Nominated: Logan Williams, Methodist; Sawyer Helms, Pfeiffer.

 

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week

Madison Lowery, Pfeiffer - The junior from Kannapolis, North Carolina placed 17th out of 66 runners at the Elon Friday Night Lights Opener last week. Lowery completed the 4,000-meter course in a time of 14:49 was placed her as the top non-Division I runner at the meet. Also Nominated: Courtney Drumm, Methodist; Sasha Willie, Southern Virginia; Corrine Weaver, Meredith.

Women's Cross Country Rookie of the Week

Amethyst Joseph, Meredith - The freshman from Raleigh, North Carolina placed 27th out of 66 runners at the Elon Friday Night Lights Opener last week. Joseph completed the 4,000-meter course in a time of 15:47. Also Nominated: Katelyn Warner, Southern Virginia.
