Southern Virginia Readies for NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament

USA South Athletic Conference issued the following announcement on March 1

 The Southern Virginia University women's basketball team is set to face off against Shenandoah University Friday afternoon at 4:30pm at Transylvania University in the first round of the 2022 NCAA Division III National Tournament.

The matchup will be the sixth meeting between the two teams, with Southern Virginia holding the 3-2 record over Shenandoah. The Knights recorded wins in 2002, 2008, and 2018 while the Hornets won the most recent game back in 2019, 63-59.

Shenandoah is coming off an impressive ODAC Conference Championship run, taking down No.5 Randolph College 63-57, then upsetting No.1 Washington & Lee 67-59, and finally defeating No.2 Randolph-Macon in the championship round 56-43.

The Hornets are led by 2022 All-ODAC Defensive Player of the Year Sierra St. Cyr, and First Team All-ODAC selection Olivia Weinel. Weinel leads Shenandoah with 13.4 points per game, and is shooting .485 from the field, while St. Cyr comes in with nine points per game and is shooting .454 from the field.

Southern Virginia is coming off their championship run in their inaugural year within the USA South Athletic Conference, downing Mary Baldwin in the first round and Piedmont in the quarterfinals 62-53. In the championship game against Berea, the Knights rallied in the fourth quarter to lock in the 73-62 victory, earning their first bid to the NCAA tournament for the first time in program history.

The Knights will look to First Team All-Conference, and Defensive Player of the Year Katie Garrish to lead the team in Friday's matchup. Garrish comes into the game recording 14.9 points per game, and 9.2 rebounds per game. Garrish recorded a conference-high 18 blocks in the tournament and will have her presence felt around the hoop.

Savanna Christensen will have eyes on her, leading the team in both points per game (15.5), and rebounds per game (9.7). Christensen earned First Team All-Conference honors with Garrish and will look to be a leader against Shenandoah.
