Rome High School is set to launch its first girls’ flag football team in the fall of 2025, presenting a new opportunity for female athletes at the school. This initiative is supported by a grant from the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation.
Superintendent Dr. Eric L. Holland shared enthusiasm about the program, stating, “We’re celebrating a major upgrade to our athletic program — all made possible by a generous grant from Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation.” He added that the funding will cover essential start-up costs and will provide female athletes with the chance to compete and potentially earn scholarships, as opportunities in girls’ flag football continue to expand.
Flag football, sanctioned by the Georgia High School Association, is a rapidly growing sport, with over 250 schools participating as of 2024. The season is played in the fall, with the state championships held at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
Rome High is preparing to compete in Area 7 against North Georgia teams such as Dawson County, Dalton Academy, Fannin County, Gilmer County, Heritage (Catoosa), LaFayette, and Ringgold. Rome High Athletic Director Chris Boden expressed excitement about the program’s potential, highlighting students’ past interest and participation in flag football games at the school.
The school plans to release more details and tryout dates in the coming weeks.
