Willie Spears, a motivational speaker with experience in education, addressed teachers at the Rome City Auditorium on Friday morning. He emphasized the importance of motivation and organization for educators as they prepare for the new school year.
“I want to encourage you to motivate, to be prepared, to be organized, to realize this is hard work. We don’t want to go through the motions. Enjoy what you do, and remember the impact that you’re making,” Spears stated. “You’re making a tremendous impact in the lives of these students, a tremendous impact, and we’re grateful for you.”
Spears’ speech included humor and meaningful lessons that engaged the audience. As the keynote speaker for the 2025 Rome City Schools Kickoff Classic, he reminded teachers not to contribute negativity in classrooms but rather to serve as positive role models.
The event brought together all Rome City Schools teachers and staff at the Rome City Auditorium. They were welcomed by performances from the Rome High band, cheerleaders, and mascot Willie the Wolf. The gathering serves as a pep rally marking the start of the 2025-2026 school year.
Rome High’s Air Force JROTC cadets presented colors while Grand Finale, Rome High School’s Show Choir performed the national anthem. The Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council led attendees in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.
The district introduced its slogan for this school year: Engage Students. Empower Staff. Elevate Our Success—displayed on red shirts worn by over 900 people present.
Several speakers attended including Rome Board of Education Vice Chair Will Byington; Rome City Manager Sammy Rich; Rome Police Chief Denise Downer-McKinney; Atrium Health Floyd CEO Kurt Stuenkel—all expressing appreciation toward educators’ efforts within their community.
Rome City Schools Superintendent Dr. Eric L Holland highlighted this year’s slogan’s significance during his speech: “My day to change world is over but I also have platform strike brain just might change world,” said Dr Holland adding how important it was striking curiosity about reading among students encouraging them not only getting into schools or colleges but succeeding through life too.”
Two employees were recognized reaching thirty years service—Belinda Miller & Penny Atkinson—and West Central Elementary honored Best Staff Attendance/Retention/Safe Place Work whilst Elm Street Elementary received recognition Best School Culture.”
Following videos featuring words from students/teachers/principals alongside inspirational story East Central Elementary teacher Nicole Kunczewski—the spirit competition commenced.”
Elm Street’s teachers won dance competition while West Central triumphed again school spirit contest before everyone joined dancing along song ‘Boots Ground.’ Event concluded singing alma mater linked arms swaying singing returning energized ready start new academic term.”
