Today, the House of Representatives passed the Gulf of America Act, introduced by Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene. This legislation aims to make permanent a previous executive order by former President Trump, renaming a significant body of water as the Gulf of America.
In her statement following the passage, Congresswoman Greene emphasized her pride in advancing this bill through the House. She highlighted that the United States bears the responsibility for protecting and securing maritime routes in this region, citing its significance for commerce and national security. “Our U.S. armed forces protect the area from any military threats,” she noted, also mentioning concerns about trafficking activities conducted by Mexican cartels.
Since January 2025, over 100,000 pounds of cocaine and more than 10,000 pounds of marijuana have been seized by the U.S. Coast Guard in these waters. Greene attributed this issue to Democratic policies which she claims have weakened border enforcement.
Greene argued that renaming geographical landmarks within the United States is not unprecedented, referencing past instances such as when President Obama renamed Mount McKinley to Denali in 2015. She urged Senate colleagues to expedite passing this bill to present it to President Trump.
