Calhoun City Schools announced on May 12 that the Georgia State Board of Education has approved the renewal of its System Charter for a five-year term covering 2026 to 2031. The renewal allows the district to continue using local flexibility measures aimed at improving academic achievement and student success.
The approval is significant because it enables Calhoun City Schools to operate under a performance-based contract, granting “flexibility waivers” from many state mandates. This arrangement supports innovative educational models, unique scheduling, and decision-making by School Governance Teams. According to the official website, Calhoun City School District provides public education from early childhood through high school in Calhoun, Georgia. It operates five schools that serve about 4,200 students and partners with families and the community to enhance academic, arts and athletics programs. The district maintains a 100 percent graduation rate.
The district has been recognized as Georgia Charter System of the Year twice, an honor that highlights exceptional governance by empowering local School Governance Teams in school-level decisions, improvements in graduation rates and College and Career Ready Performance Index scores through flexible learning environments, as well as strong partnerships with industry and higher education.
Recent recognition includes Calhoun High School being named a 2026 Advanced Placement Honor School for achievements in AP STEM courses. Elections were recently held for parent, teacher, and community member seats on each school’s governance team for the upcoming year. These teams allow stakeholders—including parents—to collaborate directly with school leadership on initiatives intended to support student achievement.
The new charter term will focus on expanding career pathways, integrating STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math), and developing flexible learning spaces tailored for evolving workforce needs. Dr. Michele Taylor is among notable personnel at Calhoun City School District according to the official website.
