Georgia’s public schools served over 1.7 million students, according to the Georgia Department of Education’s Fiscal Year 2026-1 report. The majority, 787,206 (45.9%), attended elementary grades, while middle schools enrolled 388,733 (22.7%), and high schools had 539,092 (31.4%).

Chronic absenteeism has continued to challenge Georgia schools following the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing at least 10% of school days in 2024, based on the Georgia Department of Education data. In response, GaDOE implemented a statewide strategy that includes a real-time attendance dashboard, a public awareness initiative, and targeted assistance for districts with the greatest needs in hopes of increasing daily attendance.

Georgia lawmakers updated school attendance legislation in 2025, passing a bill to prohibit expulsion solely on the grounds of absenteeism. The new law introduces expanded reporting requirements and provides guidelines that align with existing programs aimed at offering alternative diploma pathways for students.

In 2026, Georgia recorded an average student-to-teacher ratio of about 14:1, outperforming the national average of 15:1.
