Post-pandemic, chronic absenteeism has persisted in Georgia schools, with 20.7% of students missing 10% or more of school days in 2024, based on Georgia Department of Education reports. In response, the GaDOE introduced a statewide initiative that includes a real-time attendance dashboard, a public awareness campaign, and targeted support for districts most in need to improve attendance rates.
In 2025, Georgia lawmakers approved updates to school attendance legislation, prohibiting expulsion solely for absenteeism. The new law also introduces additional reporting requirements and coordinates with programs designed to help students earn diplomas via alternative routes.
By 2026, Georgia reported an average student-to-teacher ratio of about 14:1, outperforming the national average of 15:1.
